Autumn ukon refers to turmeric that bears flowers in autumn while spring ukon refers to turmeric that bears flowers in spring. The autumn turmeric, spring turmeric and purple turmeric that many people referred to in Taiwan are in fact autumn ukon, spring ukon and purple ukon. However, their names may be similar but the plant used varies greatly. Many turmeric plants for ornamental use or other purposes have been introduced into Taiwan in the past. They have similar appearance and their roots are of different colors, such as yellow, light yellow, green, purple, white and orange, but they may not be autumn ukon, spring ukon or purple ukon. Many farmers and manufacturers call their products autumn ukon, spring ukon or purple ukon without first verifying their species and origin, causing confusion in turmeric species/ origin, name and products in Taiwan.
