According to research, (yujin) ukon used in the Tang Dynasty is the modern Curcuma longa L. During the Tang Dynasty, traditional Chinese medicine was introduced into Japan and Japan has continued using the old name “yujin (ukon)” today. There are three types of turmeric used for health purposes in Japan, including autumn turmeric, spring turmeric and purple turmeric. Some manufacturers also refer to galangal as white turmeric. The yujin (ukon) used in Chinese medicine is in fact the root-tuber of turmeric or curcumae rhizome rather than the root of the plant yujin (ukon).
